First Filipina Pilot Commands The Sky

As today’s post is #100, I thought it would be fitting to write about how far women keep pushing the gender barrier in our favor. I’ve always tried to write about women who make choices in life that provide for their community or are role models for young people. The fact that I keep finding amazing women is no surprise, but what continually surprises me is how each woman accomplishes her goal without losing her dignity or cater to society’s version of what should be so. Women’s roles continue to evolve, as in the case of the first female pilot.

Traditionally, planes have been flown by men until I read about Brooke Castillo, one of 14 Filipina pilots. It’s not so much that Castillo flies a plane, she’s the first woman to fly a commercial plane with an all female crew.

For Castillo, being a pilot was not something she thought as the profession for her. It was a case of being at the right place and time when she thought of taking the entrance exam for aviation school and passed. Since then she has flown commercial planes for Cebu Pacific and has been trained and certified in France as an Airbus instructor. For Castillo, flying the plane is the easy part. “The hardest part is deciding every time when to take off, when to touch down. There’s no room for wrong decisions,” said Castillo.

Castillo’s love of flying and training other pilots is inspirational to other women. As someone who came upon this opportunity by chance, she has paved the way for other female pilots, as well as earned the respect of other pilots.

Stories like Castillo is what inspires me to keep writing. As I discover these incredible women, it reminds me that women are constantly changing people’s views about them, as well as the world we live in. I, for one, am proud to be in the same company. That’s my take on this, what’s yours?
